Why Coaching and the ICF Matters

Why Coaching Supervision Matters More Than Ever

There is a growing demand for coaching and leadership development inside organizations. Almost 80% of consumers believe it is important for coaches to have credentials or be certified, signalling that coaching within organizations continues to grow as a professional discipline, not just a trend or a task that a manager can tackle ‘off the side of their desk’.

If you are considering investing your time and money in a coach education program, ICF-accredited programs give you the best return on your investment and confer instant credibility on you as a member.

It’s important to note that the ICF itself does not provide training but it does oversee the standards of education programs. ICF-accredited programs must complete a rigorous review process and demonstrate that their curriculum aligns with the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics.

There are multiple ICF-accredited programs to choose from (including The Coaching Academy for Leaders) and there are different levels of coaching credentials you can receive from the ICF (see the three primary levels below). Take into account that the process and standards are regularly updated, and it can be difficult to figure out what your next steps should be if you’re navigating the process on your own.

ICF Credentials Explained: ACC, PCC, and MCC

The Unique Challenges of Internal Coaching Programs
The ICF Certification has three primary credential levels, the Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach, and Master Certified Coach.

Associate Certified Coach (ACC)

The ACC is a Level 1 Accreditation for those who have no prior ICF Coach Training or leaders integrating coaching into their roles. The ACC lets organizations know that you’ve done the work to develop the core knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding required to be an effective coach.

To become an ACC you must complete at least 60 hours of coach-specific training through a Level 1 Accredited Coach Education Provider and obtain a minimum of 100 hours of coaching experience. In addition, you must have 10 hours of Mentor Coaching and you must also undergo a performance evaluation with the updated Minimum Skills Requirements. Finally, you must write the ICF Credentialing Exam to prove that you have a high degree of understanding of the competencies required.

Required validated skills for the ACC include fundamental coaching competencies and core ethical practices, building client relationships, and effective communication.

Professional Certified Coach (PCC)

The PCC is a Level 2 Accreditation for currently practicing coaches, whether you are working internally in an organization or are hired as an external practitioner. It builds on the work completed in the ACC and is therefore ideal for those seeking to deepen their coaching expertise.

To obtain this ICF credential, you must have at least 125 hours of coach-specific training through a Level 2 Accredited Coach Education Provider. You must complete a performance evaluation at the PCC Level and, if you did not complete your Level 1 Pathway to the ACC, you will now be required to complete 10 hours of Mentor Coaching.  The coach credentialing exam is also required at the PCC level. To be eligible for your PCC you must have logged a minimum of 500 hours of coaching experience.

Required validated skills for the PCC include advanced coaching techniques, including the ability to drive transformative change by understanding the person more deeply than their problem. In coaching, we often describe this as coaching The Who, not the What. You must also demonstrate enhanced client partnerships.

Master Certified Coach (MCC)

To become a Master Certified Coach, MCC you require 200 hours of coach-specific training through a Level 3 Accredited Coach Education Provider, 10 additional hours of Mentor Coaching, and complete a performance evaluation with the updated Minimum Skills Requirements. You also require a minimum of 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

The required validated skills for the MCC indicate mastery of coaching practices. The MCC level of mastery also often points to a leadership track record within the coaching community, not to mention exceptional client impact.

What’s New for ICF Certification in 2026?

What Effective Coaching Supervision Provides

The ICF has changed the application process, as well updated the requirements for the ACC and PCC Accreditation.

Simplified Accreditation Pathways

The ICF now has two simple application routes for each credential level.

Level 1, 2, and 3 Pathways:

  • You complete an ICF-accredited program. This is the simplest path as it includes all of the necessary mentoring and performance evaluation built into the program.

Portfolio Path:

  • For those with previously-achieved credentials such as those going from the ACC to the PCC, or the PCC to the MCC.

  • Those who have non-ICF accredited training may follow the Portfolio path. To go this way, you must submit documentation showing that your training aligns with ICF ethics, standards, and competencies. In addition to the documentation, you must also pass the performance evaluation and credentialing exam.

Prior to this year, there was an ACSTH pathway. If you’ve already started your application process using this route, the ICF has automatically transferred your application to the Portfolio Path.

Full details on the ICF Accreditation Pathways can be found in our comprehensive guide: How To Become A Certified Coach in 2026: Choose The Right Coach Education Training Program For You

Updated Skills Requirements (ACC and MCC)

Effective January 1, 2026, ACC and MCC credential candidates will be held to updated Minimum Skills Requirements (MSRs) during the performance evaluation portion of the certification levels.

The revised skill requirements provide greater clarity on what excellence looks like at each credential level and will help coaches enhance their skills and confidence while ensuring a consistent, fair, and credible credentialing process.

PCC requirements have not changed, although the format has been updated to match the ACC and MCC for better alignment and consistency throughout all Levels of Accreditation.

Updates to ICF Codes and Competencies

In addition to changes to the Accreditation Levels themselves, the ICF made updates to the Code of Ethics in 2025 to reflect the evolving realities of professional coaching. The revised Code broadens who the standards apply to, clarifies professional responsibilities, and reinforces expectations around ethical decision-making, transparency, and clear role boundaries. It also acknowledges the growing role of technology in coaching, underscoring ICF’s ongoing commitment to professionalism, accountability, and public trust.

The ICF’s Core Competencies were also updated in 2025, and now include an increased emphasis on coaching supervision.

How to Choose the Right ICF Coach Certification Program For You

How to Know When to Bring in a Coach Supervisor

There are a number of factors that each individual considering receiving their coaching certification should consider, and determine which are most important to them when making their decision.

Those include:

Lifestyle Compatibility

Does the program suit your lifestyle and career needs? For example, The Coaching Academy for Leaders program is delivered with the busy professional in mind, meaning you can pace your learning to fit a demanding schedule. Our payment plans and bundles are designed to flex to your budget.

Tuition

While you’re doing your research be sure to take into account not only the total cost of the program, but to do your due diligence to flush out any hidden or additional fees. Is there a payment plan?

Curriculum or Program Focus

Every coach education program differs slightly in its focus or curriculum. Some programs focus on health coaching, or spiritual coaching, for example. The Coaching Academy for leaders is specifically geared towards leadership development coaching and training, so students are surrounded by peers who are interested in topics such as internal coaching, business coaching, performance coaching, corporate coaching, manager coaching, and executive coaching, as well as personal and professional development.

You’ll also want to ensure that the program being offered is aligned with your current ICF accreditation level and goals, and most importantly, that the curriculum has been updated to accommodate current 2026 ICF standards. Built-in Mentor Coaching and Evaluation are also key to your success.

Alumni Support

Finally, you’ll want to determine if the program has sufficient, if any, alumni support and what it includes. Does it encourage and/or offer continuing education? Support for when you have questions? A network to connect with?

The Elevation Network exists to support and strengthen the journey of students and alumni of The Coaching Academy for Leaders beyond the classroom, fostering community, confidence, and career development. Our mission: supporting better leaders for a better world through coaching.

ICF Certification FAQs

The Future of Internal Coaching Programs

What is ICF Certification?

ICF Certification is a professional credential awarded by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) to coaches who meet globally recognized standards for education, experience, ethical practice, and demonstrated coaching competence.

How much does it cost to get ICF Certified?

Because there are a number of institutions that offer ICF Certification, costs and individual program-styles will vary. It is up to individuals interested in receiving certification to research and compare different programs to determine which is best for them, based on a number of factors, including overall cost of tuition.

How difficult is the ICF exam?

The difficulty of the ICF exam depends largely on which credential level you are pursuing (Acc, PCC, or MCC) and how well your training has prepared you to think like a coach, not just recall information.

The ICF Certification exam is not a memorization test. It is designed to test your ability to apply the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics in real coaching scenarios.

Does the ICF provide certification?

No, the ICF Certification is not a training program in and of itself. Instead, it is a credentialing process that is overseen by the ICF which verifies that a coach has not only taken training but is qualified, ethical, and competent according to globally recognized benchmarks.

What is the difference between ICF certification and an ICF-accredited training program?

An ICF-accredited training program provides the education, mentoring, and performance evaluation required to apply for certification.

ICF Certification is the credential awarded by the International Coaching Federation after you meet all education, experience, and assessment requirements.

Which ICF Credential should I start with?

If you are new to coaching, start with the ACC (Associate Certified Coach). The PCC and MCC are designed for more experienced coach practitioners and require more coaching hours and a deeper demonstration of the understanding of coaching principles.
